CORE: Emotional Learning

At Eltham East Primary School Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an integral part of all that we do

We have a very well-developed SEL teaching and learning program that we call CORE- due to the fact that it is the ‘core’ anchor to all learning and experiences at school. The five main domains of our CORE program are;

  • Personal Learning

  • Social Learning

  • Emotional Learning

  • Body Safety Education

  • Positive Coping

Through weekly CORE lessons, our teachers draw on resources from The Resilience Project and Respectful Relationships to explicitly teach vital social skills such as:

  • Cooperation

  • Managing conflict

  • Making friends

  • Coping and resilience

  • Recognising and managing emotions

At EEPS, our programs are tailored to the needs of our community and built on safe, respectful relationships that foster a strong sense of belonging and inclusion. Frameworks like Be You, The Resilience Project, and Respectful Relationships guide our commitment to supporting children’s mental health and social-emotional well-being, with the goal of making a meaningful difference in the lives of our students.

Teachers adapt programs to meet the unique needs of our community, prioritising safe, respectful relationships. CORE lessons are timetabled to explicitly teach social and emotional learning (SEL), and we invest in building staff capacity to deliver high-quality SEL instruction.

We promote:

  • Social and emotional learning, including the Respectful Relationships program.

  • Authentic partnerships with parents, carers, and families.

  • Support for students experiencing mental health challenges.

  • e-Smart awareness to enhance cybersafety.
